Happiness and Courage

It takes courage to be happy. Why? When our culture says that money is the only path to happiness, we need to have the presence of mind and courage to challenge that assertion. There are a million paths to happiness, and money is only one path.

These days, to be happy is to be counter-culture. Positive thinkers are cultural warriors; we challenge the apparent truths of the “rational” and “spiritual” leaders around us.

Heroes of happiness are everywhere:

1. The terminally ill person who refuses to give in to fear when thinking about his impending death. Instead, he chooses to reminisce cheerfully about the rich life he has lived.

2. The recently divorced woman who jumps for joy at the prospect of beginning her life again.

3. The bankrupt businessman who is excited about the challenge of earning back his wealth.

4. The coworker who refuses to lament about bad Mondays.

5. The person who dances in the rain.

6. The cowboy who laughs after being thrown by a bronco at the rodeo.

7. The newly diagnosed quadriplegic, who despite the sympathies of well-wishers is eager to begin his new life and learn new skills.

8. The person who refuses to watch the nightly news; choosing instead to spend time with her family.

9. The person who is happy at work.

10. The person just fired from his job who plans to find work that offers greater fulfillment.

You can be a hero of happiness too. Challenge the doomsayers around you. Refuse to give in to their tired worries and frustrations. Your weapon is joy. Wield your joy like a sword; slay the dragon of negativity. Have the courage face head-on your anger, fear and sadness. What is there to be depressed about —nothing— you are alive! You are a living success story.

You must summon the courage never again to think a negative thought. Make a commitment to yourself in the form of a vow. Vow to always strive for total happiness no matter what! You will thank yourself for it.

I don’t recommend the following in regards to others, but agree that it is admirable to laugh at oneself.
“Have the courage to laugh in the face of anger, fear, apathy and sadness.”

also, not sure how you meant apathy to fit in?

    Lloyd:

Yes, you are correct, “laugh[ing] in the face of anger” is not a good idea. You are liable to get make the situation worse. I think I got a litte carried away, especially with the statement, “wield your joy like a sword”. :) It sounds like I have started a war against negativity. Funny.
