Happiness and Risk Taking
If you have committed to the practice of happiness in your daily life, your perspective begins to change. Imagine what might happen if you decide to be happy no matter what. Imagine experiencing less worry, less guilt and less fear. You will still occasionally feel the emotions of worry, guilt and fear, etc. as all these “action signal” emotions are valuable and will help you survive on this planet. The big difference for a person who is committed to happiness is that you will not experience the pain of these emotions longer than you have to. After changing your perceptions or procedures, the emotional pain will go away. Of course, even for a person who has committed to happiness, if you are injured, recognize that you will still experience physical pain.
By reducing self-inflicted emotional pain you can allow yourself to take more risks, especially social risks. More risks generally mean greater rewards. Imagine achieving all of your social goals, whatever they may be. Perhaps you want to be an expert negotiator. A person committed to happiness has a major advantage in negotiation. Imagine Ad Hominem counter-arguments having little to no effect. Imagine feeling less intimidation during a meeting. Imagine being able to see the positive opportunities in any negotiated outcome. Imagine asking for a concession on a deal point, getting a negative response, and then walking away without any emotional scratches. In a sense, a happy negotiator is a bulletproof negotiator.
Happiness and social risk taking go hand-in-hand. It is a big world out there, and there is infinite opportunity for a social risk-taker.
