The Reverse Positive Focus Technique
No doubt, you are aware of the power of positive thinking to change your own attitude. Perhaps there is another way to change your attitude, one that may be easier and more natural?
I have said that your external reality is a mirror of your internal reality. It occurred to me today that it may be possible to generate cheerfulness (or any other positive characteristic) within yourself by focusing on cheerfulness in your external environment. That is, by taking time to notice other people’s cheerfulness around you, you may be able to become more cheerful yourself.
This technique is an adaptation of the well-known phenomena that occurs after you have bought a fancy car. When you look around, it appears that nearly everyone on the road is driving the car that you bought. The mechanism that makes the Reverse Positive Focus Technique work is the combination of the above phenomena in combination with a person’s natural empathy. Empathy is the tendency to duplicate the emotional responses of people who you observe.
The “reverse” part of this technique is that instead of focusing inwardly on your own mental mechanism to change your attitude, you focus externally on the cheerfulness of others around you to change your attitude.
I am going to attempt to use this technique today.
