How Much Do You Value Happiness?
Do you value happiness? A value, Ayn Rand says, is that which one acts to gain and/or keep. Your actions to gain or keep happiness are an indicator of how much you value happiness. Your actions indirectly show your hierarchy of values. Everyday you make decisions about which values to pursue and which to ignore; some values override other values. One might say that the effort that you expend pursuing happiness is proportional to the degree that you value happiness.
There is a twist to conventional thinking however, as happiness is not a concrete value in the same sense that a Mercedes-Benz is a concrete value. Happiness is an emotional state; it is not present physically in your external environment. Thus, your actions to pursue happiness will be mostly internal mental actions.
Your pursuit of happiness will be dominated by mental actions, not physical action. In this sense, everyone in the world, no matter who they are, what disabilities they have, or how wealthy they are, are each equally capable of successfully achieving happiness.
Demonstrate your commitment to happiness by systematically pursuing happiness through mental and physical actions. Commit to radical happiness. Make happiness your one of your top values.
Abraham-Hicks reminds us:
“We are really advocates of just getting as happy as you can be—which takes care of everything. Even if you don’t have reason to be happy—make it up. Fantasize it. Make a decision that you’re going to be happy one way or another—no matter what. ‘No matter what, I’m going to be happy! If I have to ignore everybody; if I have to never watch television again; if I have to never pick up a newspaper again, I’m going to be happy. If I never have to see that person’s face again, I’m going to be happy. If I have to see that person’s face, I’m going to find something to see in that person’s face that makes me happy. I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be happy.’”
