Dalai Lama – The Art of Happiness
I have been listening to the Art of Happiness book-on-tape cassettes over the last few days. I appreciate the high quality of the presentation. A voice actor speaks the Dalai Lama’s words. I think the voice actor does a good job of conveying the Lama’s solemn words.
It was interesting to get the perspective of the Dalai Lama on the subject of happiness. I was pleasantly surprised that our theories of happiness were generally the same; there were many points of intersection between his theory and mine.
It was interesting to hear about the Buddhist focus on suffering and the value of meditating on the pain of others as a way of cultivating feelings of compassion. I also appreciated the Lama’s thoughts about cultivating patience, tolerance and a general internal state of peace.
I was especially delighted when the Dalai Lama defined spirituality as primarily a mental practice where one focuses on generating and maintaining positive states of mind. For a long while, I have been struggling to define spirituality in operational terms, and I think the Dalai Lama just answered my question.
Overall, I think the tapes series is worthwhile. It is refreshing to hear a theory of happiness from an eastern civilization perspective.
