Happiness is the Goal AND the Means
My friend Alexander Kjerulf [check out his excellent website and buy his book] mentioned in a recent comment that he believes that “Happiness is the goal AND the means”. This is such an insightful statement that I just had to blog about it.
Yes, happiness is the goal AND the means. This quotation triggers many thoughts in my mind, namely:
- Happiness comes as the result of a personal decision, made in every moment
- Happiness requires effort, a little more than you may have expected, but not more than you have feared
- Waiting around for someone or something to MAKE you happy is futile
- Your real-life, trial-and-error efforts to make yourself happy in the moment *SURPRISE* actually make you happy
- Complicated instructions about “how to make yourself happy” are a distraction, happiness is actually very simple; act happy to be happy
- We can make ourselves happy in exactly the same way that we make ourselves smile, or make ourselves laugh
