The Sun Metaphor and Happiness
When we heed the suggestion to appreciate our lives more, sometimes we focus too narrowly on our immediate situation and surroundings. For instance, we may begin to feel a new appreciation for our families, for hot showers, for the bunch of bananas on the breakfast table. This is fine. There is, however, an effective metaphor that can help us widen our perspective.
Imagine the sun, its rays of sunshine cover the whole world. There is nothing that the light does not touch.
Imagine that you are the sun, looking down on the earth. Imagine that the intensity of your light represents the strength of your appreciation for all things.
Remember that, even if there appears to be an object not worthy of your appreciation, that there always exists an aspect of that object that is worthy. You must use your creative and flexible mind to shift your perspective to ferret out the aspects of that object which are worthy of your positive regard.
