The Jukebox Metaphor of State Management
Anthony Robbins uses a wonderful metaphor to describe how we can manage our emotional states, I call it the jukebox metaphor.
Imagine a Wurlitzer jukebox filled will records. The jukebox represents your mind, and each record represents an emotional state. In psychological circles the idea that records or tapes can represent emotional states or thoughts is very common. Habitual behaviors or automatic thoughts can be said to be records that run in your head. When reality pushes the buttons on the jukebox your brain plays a record in your mind.
The secret is that you can push your own buttons, that is, you can choose what record you play. You can decide what record you want to play at any time. All that it takes is a conscious decision.

The concept that we can control our emotions is a powerful one, especially when we’re continually led to believe by pharmaceutical companies that we are out of control and plagued by mental illnesses that are only manageable with the help of medication.
